Why do we teach this?

At Laughton Junior and Infant School our History curriculum is designed to ignite and stimulate children’s curiosity about the past. Through engaging topics and a focus on subject specific terminology, children will be given opportunities to investigate and interpret the past alongside gaining a deeper knowledge of British, local and world history.  Our curriculum will inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past, whilst equipping pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Our History lessons will help pupils understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups. Because of this, we feel it is important for the subject to be taught discretely as well as incorporated within other curriculum subjects such as English, Art and Design and Technology.



What do we teach? What does this look like?

Our History curriculum aims to excite the children and allow them to develop their own skills as historians. We encourage regular references to historical reading (including timelines) as well as a hands-on approach involving artefacts and outreach programmes where appropriate so as to bring history alive to our young learners. As part of a topic lead programme, it allows opportunities for cross curricular links to be made to ensure the children have many occasions where by they can apply their knowledge and understanding.

Our whole school approach to teaching this subject includes many areas:

  • Planning and delivery of engaging lessons with high quality resources to aid understanding of conceptual knowledge.

  • Introduction of challenging concepts and new vocabulary.

  • Knowledge and skills that are built upon from previous learning.

  • Opportunities to encourage and enable children to explore and find out for themselves.

  • Children accessing educational visits and/or visitors into school in order to explore and bring to life aspects of and periods in History.

  • Effective formative assessment and feedback that informs future learning.


What will this look like?

Our approach at Laughton Junior and Infant School results in children who are curious, motivated and excited to explore, question, compare and evaluate the past and its impact on our world today. Outcomes in topic and literacy books, evidence a broad and balanced history curriculum and demonstrate the children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge. Educational trips and visitors enable our children to widen their experiences, knowledge and understanding of History.
