Geography

Intent

Why do we teach this?

At Laughton Junior and Infant School our Geography curriculum inspires pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.  We aim to open up the world beyond each child’s personal experiences and provoke them to ask and seek answers to questions about the natural and human environment Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

We develop core geographical skills which are built into each area of study enabling pupils to deepen their own understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, of the formation and use of landscapes and environments and how these are interconnected and change over time.

Implementation

What do we teach? What does this look like?

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. The local area is fully utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded. School trips and fieldwork are provided to give first hand experiences, which enhance children’s understanding of the world beyond their locality.

Our whole school approach to teaching this subject includes many areas:

  • Through topics that will motivate, interest and inspire our children.

  • Planning and delivery of engaging lessons with high quality resources to aid understanding of conceptual knowledge and skills.

  • Introduction of challenging concepts and new vocabulary.

  • Knowledge and skills that are built upon from previous learning.

  • Opportunities to encourage and enable children to acquire and practise skills, explore and find out for themselves.

  • Effective formative assessment and feedback that informs future learning.
